A Health Promoting School is a place where all members of the school community work together to provide students with integrated and positive learning experiences and an environment that promotes and protects their health. (WHO, 1996)
The Thunder Bay District Health Unit has chosen to adopt the Health Promoting Schools approach for working with the school communities. This model has been embraced by the World Health Organization (WHO) and includes collaboration in the following:
-
Supporting teachers as they educate their students about health and healthy living
-
Help to maintain and monitor safe and healthy physical environments for students and teachers
-
Create connections between schools, students, parents, and the local community
-
Help to develop school health policies that influence the schools' actions in regard to promoting health
