The Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) received the designation of Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) from the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) (click here) in May of 2011. The award illustrates the commitment of continuing to use up-to-date evidence to enhance the quality of its services and programs.
THe Health Unit partnered with the RNAO as a Best Practice Spotlight Candidate for 3 years prior to receiving the designation. That partnership resulted in the creation of a work environment in which the most current research evidence was used by nurses to support breastfeeding mothers; ensure programs are youth friendly and increase awareness of women abuse screening.
This designation means that the citizens of Thunder Bay have the assurance that the programs and services delivered by the TBDHU are of the highest standards of protection, prevention and promotion which will create healthy communities and environments through evidence-informed, cost efficient programming.
During the Health Unit's first designate period, three additional BestPractice Guidelines were implemented by staff:
- Client Centred Care
- Primary Prevention of Childhood Obesity
- Smoking Cessation
Currently, the Health Unit plans to continue as a BPSO for another 2 year term. .
