Radon

Radon is an odourless, colourless and tasteless gas produced during the radioactive decay of uranium. Rock and soil containing uranium can be found in many regions of Canada. Radon raises though the ground and may enter basements through cracks in the foundation or spaces around plumbing. Long-term exposure to radon gas through inhalation is known to substantially increase the risk of lung cancer.

 

Historically, the incidence of lung cancer and the correlation to radon has been observed in uranium miners. However recent studies in Europe and North America confirmed that the same risk is present in some homes. A federal/provincial/territorial radon working group estimates that radon gas accounts for 10% of all lung cancers. You can download this report at:
