Preparing ready-to-feed formula
- Use ready-to-feed formulas from freshly opened cans.
- Prepare ahead only what your baby will drink in a day.
- Make sure any formula not used right away is stored at cool temperatures in your refrigerator...if it is remaining cool still.
- Use a cooler with ice/snow if refrigerator is warming.
All water for babies under 4 months must be sterilized. For babies older than 4 months, the water must be clean and safe to drink. If the water is unsafe, treat and sterilize the water before mixing in the powder.
Sterilize the water before mixing by:
- Heating the water to a rolling boil for 2 minute s . If using a gas barbecue to boil water, use it outdoors.
- If water cannot be boiled, then add household bleach (which is 4% to 6% chlorine) to your water source. This can be done by putting 1/4 teaspoon of bleach per gallon of water. Shake the container and let it stand for 30 minutes.
- Or use camping water purification tablets. Follow the directions on the label.
All formula should be fed to your baby at room temperature, or not higher than body temperature (37°C or 98°F). Use a heat source to warm up the formula. Some bottle warmers have adapters to use in a car lighter socket.
Always clean baby bottles with boiled or "safe" water before re-using.
