The Thunder Bay District Health Unit offers food handling courses that promote safe food handling within the food service industry. This successful program has been designed to familiarize food industry staff with safe food handling practices to ensure that food is prepared, stored and served in a manner that is consistent with the Food Premises Regulation under the Health Protection and Promotion Act.
Public Health Inspectors at the Thunder Bay District Health Unit have trained and certified approximately 2,000 food handlers since the program started in 1989. There has been a 50% decrease in food borne illness outbreaks since the inception of this program.
This course uses a combination of teaching methods including instruction, demonstration and current videos.
Participants receiving 70% or better in the examination receive a certificate of completion and a wallet card from the Thunder Bay District Health Unit.
