The Medical Officer of Health is responsible for the issuance of either a boil water advisory or a drinking water advisory when the risk for illness through the consumption of contaminated drinking water is a reasonable possibility.
Boiled water advisories are generally issued when there is presence of bacteria/parasites/viruses; lack of chlorine in the system; risk of backflow; and, loss of system pressure.
A water advisory notice instructs the public to refrain from using the water all together and to use an alternate source such as bottled water, as boiling may increase the concentration levels such as nitrates and sodium. For more information about Boil Water Advisories click here
