Breastfeeding exclusively or breastmilk only is recommended for the first 6 months of a baby's life. This means no other food or liquid is given to the baby except for undiluted drops or syrups consisting of vitamins, mineral supplements or medicines. (BCC Definitions January 2006)

After 6 months when the baby is introduced to solid foods, breastfeeding is recommended to continue up to 2 years and beyond. There are many benefits to extended nursing. The benefits of breastmilk and the breastfeeding relationship do not stop at 6 months.
