What is fluoride varnish?
A protective coating that is painted on the teeth. It helps prevent new cavities from starting. It can help stop cavities that have already started from becoming worse by making tooth enamel harder.
Why is fluoride varnish recommended?
- School age children in our area have a high rate of dental disease
- Cavities in primary ('baby') teeth can cause pain and prevent children from being able to eat, speak, sleep and learn properly
Who can receive fluoride varnish?
All children under 36 months (3 years) of age whether you have dental coverage or not.
When can fluoride varnish be applied?
The ideal time is when the child is 12 - 18 months, but it can be applied as soon as the first baby teeth appear.
How is fluoride varnish applied?
How long does it take to apply the varnish?
It takes a few seconds to a few minutes (depending on the number of teeth being varnished).
How often should the varnish be applied?
Every four months is the best or at least two times per year.
