Information for Parents

How does the program work?

The focus of the program is promoting healthy child development. Parents are provided with information and support at various stages to help give their children the best start in life.

When you are pregnant

A Public Health Nurse and Family Home Visitor can visit you to provide information and support about:

  • Your changing body and emotions
  • How your baby is growing
  • The foods you and your baby need
  • What to expect when you give birth
  • Breastfeeding
  • Finding community resources you may need
  • Education, employment and affordable housing
  • Services for families new to Thunder Bay or Canada

When your baby arrives

A Public Health Nurse will phone you within a few days after your hospital discharge to ask how you are doing.  As new parents, you will probably have lots of questions.  Even if you’ve had a baby before, each baby and experience is unique.  The Public Health Nurse will offer to come and visit with you and your baby in your home.  You can receive information and support about:

  • Feeding your baby
  • Ways to encourage your baby’s growth and development (For developmental screening tools click here)
  • Staying physically and emotionally healthy
  • Keeping your baby safe
  • Finding parenting programs and services in your neighbourhood

As your children grow and develop

A Public Health Nurse and Family Home Visitor can provide home visiting to families who would like to learn more about parenting.  You can receive information and support about:

  • Building strong and positive relationships with your children
  • How to have a safe, secure and loving home
  • Parenting issues such as routines, feeding, dental health and positive ways to guide your children’s behaviour
  • Helping your children understand and express their thoughts and feelings
  • How your children grow and develop
  • Finding community resources you may need
  • Education, employment and affordable housing
  • Services for families new to Thunder Bay or Canada

Family Home Visitor

A Family Home Visitor is a parent who has experience in raising her own family.  She is trained in child development and how to support families.  The Family Home Visitor works closely with the Public Health Nurse.
