Dental Health during Pregnancy

As your body goes through many changes during pregnancy, it can also affect the health of your gums and teeth.  Contrary to old wives tales you do not lose a tooth with every pregnancy. However, it is important to take care of your gums and teeth during your pregnancy.

Did you Know?

  • Pregnancy Gingivitis is caused by changes in your hormone levels.  It causes swollen gums that lead to bleeding during brushing and flossing
  • Morning Sickness can leave stomach acids in your mouth and damage the surface of your teeth which can lead to cavities
  • Having healthy gums and teeth can reduce the risk of having a premature or low birth-weight baby

What Can I do to keep my gums and teeth healthy during my pregnancy?

  • Eat healthy foods and limit  junk foods
  • Brush at least twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss at least once a day to remove plaque buildup between your gums and teeth
  • If you experience morning sickness and vomit rinse your mouth with water or a fluoride mouth rinse to reduce the amount of stomach acids in your mouth

What About Dental Appointments?

  • It is best to see your dentist between 3-6 months in your pregnancy
  • Regular dental cleanings and check-ups before, during and after your pregnancy are important
  • Tell Your dentist that you are pregnant
  • Delay x-rays until after your pregnancy if possible
  • If you  require emergency dental treatment discuss type of drug and medication with your dentist and doctor
