As your body goes through many changes during pregnancy, it can also affect the health of your gums and teeth. Contrary to old wives tales you do not lose a tooth with every pregnancy. However, it is important to take care of your gums and teeth during your pregnancy.
Did you Know?
- Pregnancy Gingivitis is caused by changes in your hormone levels. It causes swollen gums that lead to bleeding during brushing and flossing
- Morning Sickness can leave stomach acids in your mouth and damage the surface of your teeth which can lead to cavities
- Having healthy gums and teeth can reduce the risk of having a premature or low birth-weight baby
What Can I do to keep my gums and teeth healthy during my pregnancy?
- Eat healthy foods and limit junk foods
- Brush at least twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste
- Floss at least once a day to remove plaque buildup between your gums and teeth
- If you experience morning sickness and vomit rinse your mouth with water or a fluoride mouth rinse to reduce the amount of stomach acids in your mouth
What About Dental Appointments?
- It is best to see your dentist between 3-6 months in your pregnancy
- Regular dental cleanings and check-ups before, during and after your pregnancy are important
- Tell Your dentist that you are pregnant
- Delay x-rays until after your pregnancy if possible
- If you require emergency dental treatment discuss type of drug and medication with your dentist and doctor
