Kindergarten

The main focus of these activities is on healthy lifestyles, which include healthy eating and physical activity. Help students make the connection between turning off the TV and other screens and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. We have drawn from a variety of strands of curriculum to show how physical activity can be incorporated into the classroom.

LANGUAGE

By the end of Kindergarten, children will:

  • communicate effectively by listening and speaking.
  • demonstrate understanding of a variety of written materials that are read to them (e.g. stories, poems, informational materials).

*The “Berenstain Bears and Too Much TV” is an excellent resource to teach this lesson. If you choose to use this book please note that the bears are not wearing helmets when riding a bicycle and that children should
 

Specific Expectations

Activities

Oral Communication:
Ask questions, express feelings & share ideas.

Reading:
Listen to stories, poems and non-fiction materials for enjoyment & information.

Make connections between their own experiences and those of storybook characters

Berenstain Bears:

Read the "Berenstain Bears and Too Much TV" book- discuss Turn-Off the Screens with the students and have them identify alternative activities.

tory Time: Select stories and poems that focus on the enjoyment of being physically active.

HEALTHY LIVING

By the end of Kindergarten, children will:

  • demonstrate an awareness of health and safety practices

Specific Expectations

Activities

Health and Physical Activity:
Identify safe and unsafe situations, materials and equipment.

Identify and apply basic safety rules (Rules related to the school bus, traffic, bicycling, and electrical appliances).

Demonstrate understanding that adults make most decisions regarding safety rules, and seek assistance when needed (e.g. from parent, teacher).

Berenstain Bears:
Same as above.
