Grade 1

The main focus of these activities is on healthy lifestyles, which include healthy eating and physical activity. Help students make the connection between turning off the TV and other screens and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. We have drawn from a variety of strands of curriculum to show how physical activity can be incorporated into the classroom.

Health and Physical Education - HEALTHY LIVING

By the end of Grade 1, students will:

  • identify the stages of development of humans and of other living things

Specific Expectations

Activities

Growth and Development:
Identify the major parts of the body by their proper names.

Body Parts:
When the leader calls out the name of a body part, move that body part in time to the music.

MATH - NUMBER SENSE AND NUMERATION

By the end of Grade 1, students will:

  • represent fractions (halves as part of whole) using concrete material.

Specific Expectations

Activities

Understanding Numbers:
Demonstrate the one-to-one correspondence between the number and objects when counting.

Represent and explain halves as a part of a whole using concrete materials.

Half a Heart:
Cut several paper hearts into halves. On one half write a number (3). On the other half, draw the number in small shapes (***). Distribute half of a heart to each child. Have them skip, hop or run to the music. When the music stops, each child tries to match up his half with the other. Call out an activity (e.g. jump and clap hands, reach up and then touch the floor). Students do that activity the number of times they have on their heart. Once this is done, they all trade hearts and start again.

HOMEWORK

Emphasize to the students that this is a fun and healthy activity as an alternative to TV watching and other screens.

Specific Expectations

Activities

Growth and Development:
Identify the major parts of the body by their proper names.

Exercise Guy/Gal:
Use a drawing of an “Exercise Guy or Gal to name the major body parts of muscle groups (e.g. stomach muscles, leg muscles, etc.) Then demonstrate an exercise that will work a certain part of the body. Ask the students to do the exercise at home with a family member.
