Grade 4

The focus of these activities is on healthy lifestyles, which include healthy eating and physical activity. Help students make the connection between turning off the TV and other screens and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. We have drawn from a variety of strands of curriculum to show how physical activity can be incorporated into the classroom

Health and Physical Education - ACTIVE PARTICIPATION

By the end of Grade 2, students will:

  • Identify the benefits of physical fitness.

Specific Expectations

Activities

Physical Fitness:
Recognize that muscle strength and endurance increase with exercise and physical activity.

Work Those Muscles:
See description below.

Health and Physical Education - HEALTHY LIVING

By the end of Grade 4, students will:

  • Explain the role of healthy eating practices, physical activity and heredity as they relate to body shape and size.
  • Identify the physical, interpersonal and emotional aspects of healthy human beings.

Specific Expectations

Activities

Healthy Eating:
Factors that influence body shape and size (e.g. heredity, diet & exercise).

Growth & Development:
Identify the characteristics of healthy relationships (e.g. showing consideration of other’s feelings by avoiding negative communication).

Work Those Muscles:
In the gymnasium, have the students do each of the following activities (on next page) for about 1 minute (some may take longer). Then discuss how each activity made their bodies feel and which muscles they felt were being used.

Active and Cooperative Play
Play any game with the students, which includes both physical activity and cooperation. After the game discuss the interpersonal skills required to play physically active games together. Use the words found in the word search (page 19) in the discussion.

Turn-off the Screens Word Search:
Complete the word search identifying words that demonstrate the positive effects of turning off the TV and other screens and interacting positively with others through physical activity.

Muscles Worked!!

Wall push-ups:
Have students face the wall and stand far enough away so that they can place their palms flat on the wall with elbows slightly bent. The students then bend their elbows and lean toward the wall. Then they straighten their arms and return to the standing position. Challenge students to do as many as they can.

  • Arms
  • Chest
  • Upper back
Paper skate: Provide each student with two pieces of paper. Instruct the students to place the papers on the floor and put one foot on each paper and then skate around the room.
  • Legs
  • Hip flexors
  • Heart
Aerobics: Lead the group through a series of jumping jacks, marching, arm circles, shoulder shrugs, etc. Move large muscles (e.g. Legs, buttocks). Use your arms too.
  • Ove rall body workout
  • Heart
Human wheel: Have the students sit on the floor in a circle with their feet in front of them and their hands behind them, palms down. Then ask the students to lift their bodies slightly off the floor and walk with their hands to turn around the circle. This resembles a wheel turning in a circle.
