Grade 5

The main focus of these activities is on healthy lifestyles, which include healthy eating and physical activity. Help students make the connection between turning off the TV and other screens and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. We have drawn from a variety of strands of curriculum to show how physical activity can be incorporated into the classroom.

Health and Physical Education - ACTIVE PARTICIPATION

By the end of Grade 5, students will:

  • participate on a regular basis in physical activities that maintain or improve physical fitness (e.g. one-on-one or two-on-two soccer-type games). 
  • apply living skills (e.g. goal setting, conflict-resolution techniques, and interpersonal skills that contribute to positive group interaction) to physical activities (e.g. games, gymnastics, dance, outdoor pursuits).

Specific Expectations

Activities

Physical Activity:
Participate vigorously in all aspects of the program (e.g. fitness stations, fitness circuit).

Describe factors that motivate participation in daily physical activity (e.g. idolizing a sports hero, doing an activity with your family) and connect them to various activities.

Living Skills:
Incorporate time-management and organizational skills in the goal setting process (e.g. set a realistic goal, identify and address barriers, prepare an action plan and decide who can help, and identify how to know when the goal has been reached) related to physical activity or personal fitness.


Fitness Circuit:
Students participate in designing a fitness station using equipment available. Then organize the entire class through a 30-minute fitness circuit.

Peer Teaching:
Students explain to a peer why they designed the fitness circuit the way they did. Explain what motivates them to want to do the activities.

Goal Setting:
Students will set realistic goals for reducing the amount of time spent in front of screens. Considering possible methods of recognizing success. Students may use the active lifestyle support ideas included in this package as alternative activities to try instead of watching television, playing video games, surfing the Internet or chatting with friends.


MATH - DATA MANAGEMENT & PROBABILITY

By the end of Grade 5, students will:

  • interpret displays of data and present the information using mathematical terms.

Specific Expectations

Activities

Collecting & Organizing Data:
Display data on graphs (e.g. line graphs, bar graphs, pictographs, and circle graphs) by hand and by using computer applications.

Analyzing Data:
Explain the choice of intervals used to construct a bar graph or the choice of symbols on a pictograph.

Graph Construction:
Students will collect and organize data from their personal Turn-off the Screens involvement. Students will construct bar graphs by hand to display their data selecting appropriate intervals and labels. E.g. collect amount of time active before, during and after Turn-off the Screens Week.


LANGUAGE - WRITING

By the end of Grade 5, students will:

  • use writing for various purposes and in a range of contexts, including schoolwork (e.g. to summarize information from materials they have read, to reflect on their thoughts, feelings, and imaginings).

Specific Expectations

Activities

Word Use and Vocabulary Building:
Routinely introduce new words from their reading into their writing;

Use levels of language appropriate to their purpose (e.g. informal language to write a letter to a friend and formal language to invite a guest speaker to the school)

Write Booklets:
Students may write and publish booklets about their experience during the Turn-Off the Screens campaign. Students may write fiction about life without television, create how-to booklets of things to do or make instead of watching television, or how our world would be different in both good and bad ways without this form of technology. Students may share finished products with other students.

HOMEWORK

Emphasize to students that this is a fun and healthy activity as an alternative to TV watching and other screens.

Students design their own fitness circuit at home and encourage family members to join them.
