The main focus of these activities is on healthy lifestyles, which include healthy eating and physical activity. Help students make the connection between turning off the TV and other screens and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. We have drawn from a variety of strands of curriculum to show how physical activity can be incorporated into the classroom
Health and Physical Education - ACTIVE PARTICIPATION
By the end of Grade 8, students will:
- participate on a regular basis in physical activities that maintain or improve physical fitness
Specific Expectations |
Activities |
|
Physical Activity: Participate vigorously in all aspects of the program (e.g., indoor soccer, cricket).
|
Fit Breaks: See description below. |
Fit Breaks
In small groups, have your students design five simple 2-3 minute fit breaks. Each fit break should focus on one of the following aspects of fitness.
- Endurance activities (e.g. walking, dancing, jumping)
- Flexibility activities (e.g. reaching, bending, stretching)
- Strength activities (e.g. push-ups, stair-climbing, carrying books)
The class can introduce the concept of a daily 2-3 minute fit break to the entire school. One fit break can be read over the PA system each day. Right after the announcements, a student can lead their class in a fit break. Fit break routines can be repeated throughout the school year. Fit break ideas could also be published in a school newsletter.
Discuss the benefits of physical activity during non-school hours.
Homework
Encourage the students to practice the fit breaks that they have developed and learned from their classmates with friends and family during non-school hours.
