No one can argue that being a parent is a demanding job.  But, while you’re looking after your family’s needs, who’s looking after you?  Caregivers often put others before themselves.  However, taking the time to look after your own physical, emotional and spiritual needs is so important.  It will help to relieve your stress, to be more patient in dealing with daily challenges and will allow you to enjoy the simple pleasures that come with being a parent.

NOURISHED PARENTS!

  • Feed yourself well.  We spend lots of time trying to make sure our children eat well.  To ensure you have the energy you need to fuel everything you do, take time to feed yourself as well as you feed your kids.  You deserve it!
  • Cut yourself some slack.  We can't all prepare meals from scratch every night (or maybe any night for that matter).  Instead, stock up on things like frozen vegetables, canned spaghetti sauce, and ready-made salad mixes that can help get a healthy meal to the table fast.

  • Tempt your palate.  Sure, sometimes it is just easier to make what you know the kids will eat, even when you want something with a little more spice or ethnic flavour.  No need to give in.  Make that fun Thai or curry recipe you've always wanted to try.  Just leave some vegetables, meat and grains separate before you add the sauce.  This way the kids can eat something familiar or reach for the new flavours their parents are trying.

ACTIVE PARENTS!

  • Move to Soothe. Take time to recharge your batteries. This is not selfish – this is a necessity! How about a night of bowling or skating with some friends!

  • Go with the flow.  Get your exercise in with your child –walk with the stroller, or for older kids play ball, run or take a stroll.

  • Take advantage.  While your child attends their organized activity, take that time to walk around the  arena or the soccer field.

  • Take turns.  Try arranging a baby-sitting swap with another parent – or take turns with your partner and give each other an hour to be physically active.

HAPPY PARENTS!

  • Talk it out.  Your partner, friends, family or a counselor can all provide support when you need it.  Turn to others when you feel overwhelmed.  Whenever you have negative thoughts about yourself, try really hard to turn them into more encouraging thoughts.
  • Take the night off.  Whether it's with your partner, your friends, or just by yourself, getting some time away will rejuvenate your spirit.  It can be as fancy as a dinner and dancing, or as simple as a walk or a bubble bath.
  • Catch some z's.  Getting enough sleep is vital to being able to cope with daily life.  Resist the temptation to stay up late to "get just one more thing done."  Try to fit in little naps if you need to.
