The Eat Smart! cafeteria program is designed to encourage healthy food choices, food safety and non-smoking seating in school and worksite cafeterias across the province. Eat Smart! was fist initiated in 2000 as Ontario’s Healthy Restaurant Program and has now expanded to include cafeterias. The overall goal of Eat Smart! is to contribute to the reduction of food-borne illness and chronic diseases in Ontario.

Support for promoting the program in your cafeteria through free materials such as posters, point of purchase message cards, prizes, launch day events, as well as resources like fact sheets.
How do you qualify?
It is easy to qualify for the Eat Smart! program. In fact, you may already be meeting the requirements by providing healthier food choices and a healthy environment.
There are three criteria your cafeteria must meet to join the Eat Smart! Program:
Nutrition
Your cafeteria must provide healthy food choices that reflects Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating.
Food Safety
Your cafeteria must have a history of compliance with all requirements of Ontario’s Food Premises Regulation as well as have at least one full-time kitchen employee certified in safe food handling.
Non-smoking Seating
The cafeteria must be 100% smoke free – no smoking permitted in the cafeteria.
