It's Really Cool to Walk to School

There is a lot of pressure on busy parents to ensure that their children are being active enough.  Sixty minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day might seem like a lot, but building it into the daily routine can really help.  One great way is by walking or cycling to school, instead of driving.

A recent study found that 75% of Ontario elementary school children would prefer walking or cycling to school. Further, more than 82% of Canadian children under age 11 live within walking distance of school, but only a fraction of that percentage get there on their own steam.

Here’s why it’s such a great idea:

  • More physical activity for you and your children
  • Students who are physically active do better in school
  • Fewer parking hassles
  • Less traffic around the school
  • Better air quality
  • Increased sense of community and neighbourhood safety

Up to 90% of inactive children will continue to be sedentary as adults, so it’s especially important for young children to learn the joy of active transportation. Walking with your children to school also affords you the opportunity to spend more time together, enjoying the fresh air and connecting with your children.

Commit to a walk or ride once a week and/or sharing the responsibility with other parents. This year, International Walk to School Day (Iwalk) is Wednesday, October 5th, 2011.  Iwalk day is the annual, international event of the Active & Safe Routes to School program. It is a celebration of the benefits of active transportation. To learn more about this international event visit www.iwalktoschool.org

Upcoming Events:

  • Winter Walk in February, 2012
  • Spring Walk in May or June, 2012

The Thunder Bay Active & Safe Routes to School Committee can provide schools with a year-round Active and Safe Routes to School program.  There are lots of innovative ideas such as creating "no idling" zones in front of schools, having children map out the safest neighbourhood routes, providing special storage for rollerblades and skate boards, and forming "walking/cycling school buses".  For more information, call 625-5979.
