What YOU can do to be heart healthy

  1. Determine your risks and talk to your doctor about making lifestyle changes.
  2. Quit smoking and avoid exposure to second-hand smoke.
  3. Eat healthy and enjoy a variety of foods following the Canada's Food Guide. Eat less fat and choose more whole grain breads and cereals, vegetables and fruits.
  4. Get physically active by doing something physical that you enjoy every day. Regular physical activity will keep your heart strong, as well as manage your stress and blood pressure and keep your weight at a healthy level.
  5. Maintain a healthy blood pressure.
  6. Maintain healthy blood sugar levels if you have diabetes.
  7. Lose weight if you're overweight.
  8. Identify negative stress factors in your life and use positive ways of coping with stress.
  9. Reduce or eliminate alcohol intake.
  10. Take medications exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
