Healthy, Happy Kids (E-Bulletin)

If only there were more hours in the day!

We know a family's hectic schedule can get in the way of eating healthy, being active and making time for each other.  Sometimes this can lead to feelings of guilt. Try focusing on what you are already doing right.  There might be room for improvement, but no family is perfect!  Here are a few strategies that take a little pressure off so you're able to give a little extra time to your kids when they really need it.

NOURISHED KIDS!

  • Get a jump start. Have a few extra minutes on the weekend? Get ahead of the weeknight rush by washing and cutting up vegetables.  Cook extra rice or noodles to use throughout the week.  Separate bulk meat purchases into ready-meal sizes and store them in the freezer.

  • See double.  Double up your recipe to make extra for another dinner or tomorrow’s lunch. Pack away individual meals in the freezer for easy lunches or last-minute dinners later on.

  • Do less.  Look for short cuts! Use pre-cut, pre-measured and pre-washed vegetables and salads to save time in the kitchen. Pop frozen veggies into the microwave for a quick, easy, healthy side dish. Stock up on prepared nutritious foods like pasta sauce for busy nights.
  • Plan ahead. Make a weekly menu to ensure you know what to buy at the grocery store and to help you get things ready in the morning.  Include tasks that the kids could do if they are home before you to get supper started.

ACTIVE KIDS!

A busy family doesn't always mean active, but there are great, easy ways to fit physical activity into the day.  Doing these activities together will also provide quality time as a family.  Remember, every movement and every step counts.

  • Make an activity plan or calendar.  Get everyone to share their favourite activities.  Or, fill a jar with activity ideas and take turns pulling out suggestions.

  • Fit it in. Work activity into the daily routine by vacuuming, gardening, walking the dog, taking the stairs instead of an elevator and walking (or cycling) to your destination, instead of driving.

  • Bring back PLAY and FUN.   Physical activity does not have to be an organized event.  Kids will naturally move and play when given the time and space.  So, turn off the screens and follow their lead.

HAPPY KIDS!

No matter how busy you are, some things may have to wait when your child wants to talk to you.

  • Keep it open.  Keep it honest.  Connect with your child by talking to them often about the little things in their life so when they have something bigger on their mind, they know they can trust you.  Encourage your child to come to you when they have troubles. Explain that you would be there to help them no matter what the issue is.

  • Make the time to listen.  When your child comes to you with a problem stop what you are doing.  Help your child talk about what's on their mind by asking questions.  Let them do most of the talking and thinking.  Discuss possible solutions and encourage them to trust themselves to make the right decisions.

  • You’re not in this alone.  Sometimes kids can have problems that even a parent struggles with what to do next.  There are places you can go for help.  Reaching out does not mean you’re not a good parent.  In fact, it shows how much you care.
