NOURISHED KIDS!

Eat like a champion!

  • Fuel up to move.  Send the kids off with a healthy snack either in their belly or in their bag.  Great snack choices for kids on the go include leftover pasta topped with cheese, mini whole-grain pita with hummus or cheese, a banana, raisins or trail mix.
  • Drink up.  Water is a great first choice to hydrate and keep energy levels up when exercise is long, hard or the kids are sweating a lot.  Milk and 100% fruit juices can also quench thirst and provide vitamins and minerals.
  • Take the family on a culinary adventure.  Experiment with foods from around the world.  Talk about the different countries that athletes are coming from and try something new from a different culture.  Have a sushi night, try Mexican tostadas or whip up a Mango Lassi.

ACTIVE KIDS!

Move like a champion!

  • Laugh till it hurts with Wacky Hockey.  Instead of a stick and puck use pool noodles and a beach ball, or a broom and ball, indoors or outside.
  • Strap on homemade 'skates'.  Craft skates out of empty tissue boxes, paper plates or pieces of carpet.  Then you can use everyday items to create an obstacle course.
  • Be an outdoor artist.  Challenge family members to create snow sculptures that depict an Olympic sport or a piece of equipment used during the games.
  • Try mogul mania. Set up 8-10 'moguls' made of hula hoops or circles in the snow in an alternating patterns with a space half-way through.  Get participants to run through and make up fun ways to do the course like hopping or frog-jumping

HAPPY KIDS!

Feel like a champion!

  • Build a love of sport.  Focus on your children's strengths and abilities.  Praise their accomplishments with sincerity and let them know how proud you are.
  • Emphasize the importance of accepting each other just as we are.  Healthy bodies come in all shapes, sizes and colours. Real beauty comes from within.
  • Pay attention to what you say about your own body. Your children are listening.  If you role model a healthy attitude about your own body, your kids will likely follow your lead.
  • Encourage creativity. Find ways to help your children express themselves in different ways, like through music, dance or cooking food.
