Thunder Bay Children's Charter

2009 Children's Charter Report on Children's Mental Health and Addictions

  1. What is the Children’s Charter?

The Children’s Charter is a list of 10 rights based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child that outlines basic rights and freedoms of children.  The City of Thunder Bay adopted the Children’s Charter in June 2004 and agreed to work with our community for children to have the right to services to ensure a healthy life style.

  1. Who makes up the Children’s Charter Coalition?

The Thunder Bay Children’s Charter Coalition includes representatives from health, education, social services, and the community at large all working to promote the well being of children by ensuring service continuum that is adequate, affordable, and accessible to all.  The Thunder Bay District Health Unit is part of the Children's Charter Coalition.

A City Councilor is appointed for each term of council as a member of the Coalition to serve as the Children’s Advocate for the City of Thunder Bay.

For the past five years the Children’s Charter Coalition has produced a report to the community highlighting one of the rights described in the Charter.  The purpose of the report is to:

  • educate the general public on that particular area
  • highlight successes
  • highlight areas that need further work
  • act as a call to action for parents, community members, and policy makers.
