What is an outbreak and what is the Health Unit's role?
An outbreak occurs when there is an increase in number of people who get sick from an infectious disease or food-borne illness.
Staff from the Infectious Diseases Program work with community partners and health care providers to reduce both the number and severity of outbreaks through educating those involved and implementing infection control measures.
If an outbreak does occur, staff will identify the type and source of the outbreak and implement measures in order to reduce the risk of further illness in the community.

Tips to prevent the spread of infections:
If you are not feeling well, the Health Unit recommends that you stay away from visiting hospitals and long-term care facilities to prevent the spread of infections to those who are most vulnerable; young infants and children, the elderly and those with other chronic illnesses.
Prevent getting and spreading infections by:
- covering your cough/sneeze with a tissue; if you don’t have a tissue, cough/sneeze into your upper sleeve.
- putting all used tissues in a waste basket right away.
- making sure all immunizations are up-to-date, including the annual flu shot. It’s not too late to be immunized against the flu.
- washing your hands frequently, for at least 15 seconds with soap and warm water, or by using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- staying at home if you are ill to avoid spreading infections to others.
