Avoiding Mosquito Bites

Mosquitoes are most active between dusk and dawn. If you need to be outside during this time, cover up and use insect repellent for extra protection.

Cover Up

Wear these types of light-colored clothing when going outside between the hours of dusk and dawn.

  • long sleeved shirt or jacket
  • long pants
  • Tuck pants into socks for extra protection

Use Insect Repellent

Consider using an insect repellent brand that contains DEET (N3N-dietyl-m-toluamide). The concentration of DEET should be no greater than 30% for adults and no greater than 10% for children.

Use on children over the age of two only.

How to Tell if a Mosquito Bite is Serious

Most mosquito bites cause itch and minor irritation. a small percentage can lead to serious infection, such as West Nile virus. If you have any of the following symptoms, seek medical help right away:

  • Extreme swelling or infection at the site of the mosquito bit
  • Fever
  • Muscle weakness
  • Stiff neck
  • Confusion
  • Severe headache
  • Sudden sensitivity to light
