FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 12, 2006
The Thunder Bay District Health Unit is investigating a gastrointestinal outbreak at Nipigon District Memorial Hospital’s long term care facility. At this time, a total of six residents and staff have been affected with symptoms of diarrhea and/or vomiting.
Discharges, transfers and admissions are cancelled. This outbreak has also resulted in visitor restrictions and the closure of the facility to volunteers. Family members and friends of patients are encouraged to call the hospital if they are concerned about a patient.
The Thunder Bay District Health Unit reminds the public that washing hands frequently, as well as staying at home when feeling ill can help to prevent the spread of disease.
Twenty-one people currently reside in the long term care facility.
