Superior Points Harm Reduction Program recently received an award from the Ontario Needle Exchange Network in recognition for its ‘dedication, innovation and contribution to the field of Harm Reduction in Ontario’. The presentation took place at the Ontario HIV Treatment Network The Best Practice Recommendations for Needle Exchange Programs (NEPs) in Ontario: A Think Tank on Dissemination, Implementation and Next Steps held in Toronto.
The award was the first of its kind offered by the Network which represents thirty-three needle exchange programs in the province.
“It is gratifying to be recognized for the work that we are doing,” states Don Young, coordinator for Superior Points Harm Reduction Program. “The support that we receive from our local Board of Health has made it possible for us to reach out to our target population using some pretty creative methods.”
The Think-tank was also occasion to officially release the new “Best Practice Recommendations for Needle Exchange Programs in Ontario”. The document is the first guide published of its kind. It provides work that is based on research and peer review. The document provides scientific evidence for the distribution of works, background for adequate funding and staffing and outlines best practices for both needle exchange programs and the policy makers who fund such programs.
The Best Practices Document was developed in collaboration with the local Superior Points Harm Reduction Program and with contributions from the local coordinator. It is likely to be adapted across Canada and international organizations have shown interest in it. It is available for download at http://www.ohtn.on.ca/compass.htm
