Officials from the Thunder Bay District Health Unit and St. Joseph's Care Group on Carrie Street are implementing restrictions for the Bethammi Nursing Home in a move to contain an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness. Symptoms of diarrhea, vomiting and fever have caused the cancellation of social activities and closing of both Bethammi nursing home floors at St. Joseph's Heritage to visitors, volunteers and students. All other areas in the Heritage are not affected.
Northwestern Ontario has begun to see positive lab results for influenza as well. While the activity is considered sporadic in our area, influenza is considered widespread in parts of Southern Ontario. With March break travel, the possibility of spread is higher.
"This is a good time to remember how important regular hand washing can be to prevent the spread of all kinds of infectious disease. People should wash their hands regularly with soap and water and ensure that the soap remains in contact with their hands for a minimum of 10 seconds," says Darlene Binette, Manager of Infectious Disease Programs at the Thunder Bay District Health Unit. "Also, self isolation is an important factor during the influenza season. If someone is ill, they should not do any visiting in senior homes. When someone is feeling unwell or has symptoms that include a fever, they should stay away from work, school or daycares."
