The Health Unit reports that attendance at the first week of flu clinics has been higher than usual. During the first three clinics, three thousand high risk individuals were vaccinated. This is a 56% increase compared to the numbers that attended the same facilities last year.
“We knew that the early clinics would be very busy as the vaccine was delayed approximately one month,” says Darlene Binette, Manager of Infectious Diseases at the Thunder Bay District Health Unit. “There are many clinics scheduled between now and December 20th and everyone who wants the vaccine will have the opportunity to get it.”
In order to deal with the higher volumes, security has been arranged to help with traffic flow and parking. Large signage has also been created to inform people if the parking lot is full or if the clinic is closed due to the large number of people waiting in line for vaccine.
Clinics open to the general public today. This week, flu clinics will be held:
- Mon. Nov. 13 from 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm at the Dew Drop Inn, 294 Red River Rd.
- Tues. Nov. 14 from 9:30 am – 3:30 pm at the Da Vinci Centre, 340 Waterloo St. S.
- Wed. Nov. 15 from 1:30 pm – 5:30 pm at Evangel Church, 1260 Balmoral St.
Currently there are no reports of influenza activity in our district.
