June 11, 2007 (THUNDER BAY) – According to Statistics Canada, the average age that children begin drinking is thirteen. “It’s a talking with, not a talking to” is a presentation that Hillcrest students in partnership with the Thunder Bay District Health Unit created for parents of students entering the school that addresses this teen issue.
Media are invited to the presentation at Hillcrest High School Auditorium for photos and interview Monday, June 11 at 7:00 pm. The public is invited to attend.
“In Northwestern Ontario, 66% of youth use alcohol, and nearly 35% of youth binge drink, having 5 or more drinks on any one occasion. And 25% of Northwestern Ontario youth drive after drinking alcohol,” states Nancy White, instructor of the Issues in Human Growth and Development course at Hillcrest High School. “All this drinking often leads to tragedies that could have been averted, such as instances of alcohol poisoning, car collisions, and situations of violence.”
Included in the one-hour presentation is a six-minute video made by the students that focuses on communications and relationships through open and honest discussions.
