Quitting Smoking: A New Approach

June 12, 2007 (THUNDER BAY & DRYDEN) – There are 5 fascinating facts that everyone should know about tobacco control (but few actually do). Dr. Paul McDonald will be presenting them at the North West Tobacco Control Network (NW TCAN) Quitting Smoking Forum, From Theory to Practice.  This one-day forum is open to health professionals, counsellors and anyone who wants to help smokers quit:

Thursday, June 14th, 9:30 to 3:00 Travelodge Airlane, Thunder Bay,
Friday, June 15th in Dryden at the Conference Centre

Two of Canada’s foremost authorities on quitting smoking, Dr. Andrew Pipe, Ottawa Heart Health, and Dr. Paul McDonald, Department of Health Studies and Gerontology, University of Waterloo, will offer new perspectives on the process of helping someone quit the use of commercial tobacco. Dr. McDonald will discuss recent demographic shifts and research results to demonstrate how and why we should and can alter our approach to helping current tobacco users.

Dr. McDonald is available for media interviews prior to the forum.

This workshop is funded under the Ministry of Health Promotion’s Smoke Free Ontario initiative. The NW TCAN is a partnership of the Northwestern Health Unit and the Thunder Bay District Health Unit created to build a comprehensive, evidence-based tobacco control strategy to address Northwestern Ontario’s regional needs.
