May 2, 2007 (THUNDER BAY) – Today, someone went to a school to get kids committed to wear a helmet while skateboarding. A second discussed a possible outbreak at a long-term facility. A third spoke to a client about sexually transmitted diseases. A fourth chaired a meeting to ensure that a plan was in place to deal with community wide health emergencies. Another went to the home of a new mom to show her how to breastfeed her baby.
All of them are nurses.
On Wednesday, May 9, 2007, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit invites the media to join in celebrating “National Nursing Week” at 1:30 p.m. in the Atrium.
Dr. Nancy Cameron, Medical Officer of Health, will be welcoming Joan Lesmond, Past-President of the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) to the Thunder Bay District Health Unit.
“Public health nurses play a critical role in our communities – whether they are in schools, a sexual health clinic, on our streets, or teaching a new mom how to best care for a newborn,” says Lesmond. “By taking the time to celebrate accomplishments and share expertise, nurses are better able to help those who they serve.”
The Thunder Bay District Health Unit employs almost 70 registered nurses who use their diverse skills to promote healthy living, to see clients in the sexual health clinic, to prevent the spread of disease, to serve in management roles and so much more.
The Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) is the professional association representing registered nurses wherever they practice in Ontario. Since 1925, RNAO has lobbied for healthy public policy, promoted excellence in nursing practice, increased nurses’ contribution to shaping the health-care system, and influenced decisions that affect nurses and the public they serve.
Come and meet the many faces of nursing.
