March 26, 2008 - Don’t let the mild weather fool you: it’s still flu season in the Thunder Bay District. With yesterday’s announcement of another long term care facility temporarily closing its doors due to an outbreak of respiratory illness, the Health Unit urges residents to keep their guard up.
“Since January, there have been 12 outbreaks of respiratory or enteric illness in long-term care homes and hospitals. There were six reported by this time last year,” said Darlene Binette, Manager of the Infectious Disease Programs. “Outbreaks are expected during flu season, but because we’ve experienced more reports than usual, we are asking the public to take extra care to help stop the spread of infection in our communities.”
Here are some easy steps that can make a big difference in preventing disease.
1. Hand washing is the number one way to prevent infection and reduce the risk of spreading or getting disease. If you’re unable to wash up with soap and water, a hand sanitizer is also effective.
2. Coughing and sneezing into your upper sleeve (not your hands) is the new and recommended way to stop disease germs from spreading.
3. Getting a flu shot.
4. Staying home if you are ill.
Unidentified agents have caused the majority of the outbreaks however influenza B was confirmed in one long term care facility. Cases of influenza A – the more serious strain of influenza – have been reported in the community.
In addition to official reports, Binette said there have been many anecdotal reports from people in our community of lingering illnesses, coughs and colds, and general malaise.
“Remember that the flu season is not yet over. It normally ends in early April. Please take action to protect yourself and others,” she added.
