May 9, 2008 – Today, Thunder Bay crossing guards were recognized for their service and dedication to the protection of children as they cross busy intersections on their way to and from school. Crossing guards also announced their participation in this year’s Good Ticket Campaign, in which they will be ticketing children found wearing appropriate safety gear when cycling, skateboarding or riding a scooter.
During today’s event, numerous awards were presented to crossing guards including the new award for the Participation in Partnership with Police for the Protection and Prevention of Injury for Kids, a Prestigious Award (the Six P Award) which was presented to crossing guard, Laura Rakowski. Receiving a special award and medallion, was Frank Brown who announced his retirement after working for the City for more than 45 years.
Sgt. Glenn Porter, of the Thunder Bay Police and Marita Campbell, of the Thunder Bay Risk Watch Coalition, were on hand to announce their partnership with the crossing guards for this year’s Good Ticket Campaign. “Teaching kids the rules of the road, safe cycling practices and most importantly, ensuring that they wear the protective gear are the best steps that parents can take before letting the kids jump on their bikes,” says Porter.
Campbell reports that the Good Ticket Campaign, now in its fifth year, promises to be even more successful with the help of the crossing guards. “They’re out there with our kids every day. It just makes sense that the crossing guards provide our kids with this positive message.”
Thunder Bay crossing guards, Thunder Bay Police and Thunder Bay Risk Watch Coalition are working in partnership to ensure the safety of our children when out on the streets. The Good Ticket Campaign will run May 18 to 31, 2008. Pedestrian safety is a timely issue as we approach Safe Kids Week, May 26 to June 1, 2008 and Crossing Guard Appreciation Day on May 30th.
