April 23, 2009 - The Public Health Agency of Canada has alerted health units of a severe respiratory illness in Mexico.
Officials in Mexico have reported 134 cases of the illness and 20 deaths. Symptoms of the illness include high fever, headache, pain around the eyes, shortness of breath and extreme fatigue. These symptoms progress quickly to cause respiratory distress in about five days.
Most cases occurred among previously healthy adults aged 25 to 44 years old.
The Health Unit is advising recent travelers to Mexico within the last two weeks who are experiencing any of the symptoms to see a health care provider, right away.
Before traveling to other countries, the Health Unit urges travelers to take the usual illness prevention measures:
· Ensure vaccinations are up-to-date
· Get a seasonal flu shot
· Wash your hands, frequently
· Cover your coughs and sneezes
· Stay home when ill.
