February 10, 2009 - The Health Unit is advising those planning to get a mumps catch-up vaccine to come to our clinics early as the demand to date has been very high.
According to Darlene Binette, vaccine program manager, nurses have been very busy providing the mumps catch-up vaccine. “We had almost 500 students at our Lakehead University clinic and turnout has also been very high at our weekly immunization clinics over the past few weeks. We are asking those coming out to our last two clinics to come early as the clinics run on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis. We don’t want to turn anyone away.”
The last two mumps catch-up vaccine clinics are scheduled as follows:
Many individuals born between 1970 and 1991 may be missing the second dose of the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine that is needed for full protection. With an increase in the number of mumps infections across the province, it is recommended that those missing the second dose take advantage of this opportunity.
