January 20, 2009 - The chair and executive committee members of the Board of Health were elected today during the Board’s Annual Meeting held at the Thunder Bay District Health Unit.
Joe Virdiramo, City of Thunder Bay Councillor, was re-elected as chair for a second term. Maria Harding, representing the municipality of Shuniah, was also re-elected in the vice chair position.

“The Board will be focused on recruiting a Medical Officer of Health and implementing the new Ontario Public Health Standards that were launched this month,” said Virdiramo.
Two local issues identified by the Board of Health as priorities for 2009 include community water fluoridation and street nursing.
The Board of Health is made up of representatives of the municipalities that the Health Unit serves. Municipalities may appoint their own City councillors or choose among citizens who apply to represent them. In addition, the Thunder Bay District Board of Health includes three provincially appointed members. The Board membership is available from the Health Unit website at tbdhu.com.
Board of Health meetings are held the third Tuesday of every month at the Thunder Bay District Health Unit at 999 Balmoral Street. Meetings are open to the public. Minutes from the meetings and a meeting schedule is posted on the Health Unit website at tbdhu.com.
