Local Production of "Smashed" Premieres

January 11, 2010 - Today, the grade 12 drama class at St. Patrick High School, in partnership with the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, premiered the hard hitting social issues play entitled, “Smashed.”

This local drama production deals with such serious topics as drinking and driving, peer pressure, drug misuse, body image, and the pressures of being a teenager.  It takes the audience on a roller coaster ride of entertainment, with the perfect balance of comic relief.

“Smashed” opens with a funeral for Noah Taylor, an 18 year-old tragically killed in a drinking and driving accident and taking the life of another student’s mother. The play delves into Noah’s experiences and how his decisions have affected others.

“This play is a must-see for everyone in the community,” says Ryan McCullough, drama teacher at St. Patrick High School.  “I am extremely proud of my students for having written, edited, directed, and produced the entire production.”

The concept for this play was born out of a vision had by talented writers, Laura Commisso and Danielle Pollari.  They were assisted by editors, Jenn Cavezza and Jessica Melanson, and directors, Alia Stam, Laura Commisso, and Danielle Pollari. As well, the play would not have come to life without the talented cast consisting of over 25 members.

"This play creatively weaves some important health messages for youth,” says Carrie Breitsprecher, Public Health Nurse.  “Teens in Northwestern Ontario engage in higher rates of alcohol and tobacco use and this youth-led project is an excellent example of peer-to-peer education in addressing these issues."

“Smashed” will be performed for senior elementary and high school students throughout next week.  General public performances will take place on January 14th and 15th, at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are only $5 and can be obtained at St. Patrick High School or by calling 623-5218.
