How do the youth in the City and District of Thunder Bay compare to their peers in the province?

  • 14,860 youth ages 13-19 live in the City and District of Thunder Bay.
  • Approximately 16% of those are of Aboriginal origin.
  • 15% of youth age 17 and younger live below the low income cut off.
  • The youth of Thunder Bay and District are similar to the rest of Ontario in that much of the morbidity (disease) and mortality (death) during adolescence is related to unhealthy or risk-taking behaviours.
  • Many of the risky behaviours they engage in during adolescence continue into adulthood. This can cause poor long-term health.
  • Teenagers that have one risky behaviour are more likely to have several risky behaviours.
