Photovoice: Youth and Alcohol
In 2006, the Drug Awareness Committee of Thunder Bay, in partnership with the Thunder Bay District Health Unit embarked on a project to discover how youth viewed the role alcohol played in their lives and communities.
Youth from Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School and Hillcrest High School were given disposable cameras, and asked to take photos that expressed their views on the effect of alcohol. The resulting 61 photos demonstrated a variety of themes, from injury, celebration, impaired driving, loss, and more.
The results were analyzed in a document available below. The research uncovered both similarities and distinct differences between the perception of mainstream youth and First Nations youth about the effects of alcohol on family, individuals and community.
