Alcohol is so commonplace that it is not often thought of as a drug. However, it is a mood-altering drug, classed as a depressant because it slows down the brain and nervous system. Alcohol is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream and carried throughout the body. It affects feelings and behaviour. How much you will be affected depends on:
- your size, gender, body type and metabolism;
- the type and amount of food eaten before and during drinking;
- how much alcohol you drink at one time.
