How to BE SAFE & BE SEEN when walking, running, cycling

Walking, running and biking are great ways to get in shape and get around.
However, sharing roads with vehicles takes extra care and attention.

Thunder Bay’s long nights and extreme weather conditions can increase the risk for injury, but there are steps you can take to lessen the risk.

When out walking or running:

  • Wear bright or fluorescent clothes.   They show up best in the daytime and in dull or misty weather.
  • Wear something reflective if walking or running at night or in the early morning and evening.  Reflective tape or reflective wrist or ankle bands work well.
  • Choose the safest route.  An area with good lighting and sidewalks is best.   If there is no sidewalk, travel facing traffic.
  • Make eye contact with drivers when crossing the street.
  • Stay alert.  Put away earphones so you can hear what is going on around you.

When out cycling:

  • Wear bright or fluorescent clothes in the daytime and something reflective when cycling at night or in the early morning and evening.
  • Make sure your bike is equipped with a white front light and red rear light or reflector if you ride between ½ hour before sunset and ½ hour after sunrise.  Also required under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, your bicycle must have white reflective tape on the front forks and red reflective tape on the rear forks.
  • Ride in Thunder Bay’s designated bike lanes to avoid contact with cars.
  • Educate yourself about sharing the road with motorists and follow all of the rules of road.
  • Wear a properly-fitted cycling helmet.  The law says that everyone under the age of 18 must wear a helmet, but everyone reduces the risk of severe head injury by wearing one.

When out driving your car, slow down, be alert, watch for pedestrians, and yield the right of way.

The majority of injuries are predictable and preventable.
Safety is no accident!
