Boat Safe, Boat Sober

Statistics taken from the National Boating Fatalities Report released in 2003 indicate that boating deaths account for one third of all Canadian water-related deaths.

The two key factors in boating deaths are:

  1. Not wearing a PFD (personal flotation device) (85% of boating fatalities)
  2. Consuming alcohol while boating (38% of boating fatalities)

Young adult males are most likely to be involved in boating accidents:

  • Almost all boating victims are male (91%)
  • Half (48%) are 35 to 64 years
  • One-third (33%) are 18 to 34 years of age
  • Powerboats, small open powerboats and canoes are the most frequent vehicles involved in boating deaths

Wear Your PFD

Having a life jacket in the boat but not wearing one gives many boaters a sense of false security. Although many boaters have PFDs on board, falling overboard can be very confusing and the boater may not have the ability to put on a PFD at that point. There are many new and comfortable models available on the market. Find one that is comfortable and wear it!

Local boating and alcohol statistics

Northern Injuries & Poisoning Report (Oct 1999)

15% of Ontario boat users have operated a watercraft after having 2 or more drinks (drinking and boating).
In the Kenora/Rainy River Districts, 47% have had more than 2 drinks and operated a boat.

BOAT SAFE, BOAT SOBER…
… ensure your boating trip ends well for everyone!

1) ALWAYS WEAR A LIFEJACKET!

Don't just have it in the boat, choose one and wear it …most Canadian boating victims were not wearing a lifejacket or personal flotation device (PFD) when they drowned. Lifejackets have come a long way. Inflatable jackets and a wider range of colour and style options make it easier to find and wear the one that is right for you.

2) BOAT SAFE, BOAT SOBER

Drinking alcohol on board a boat is not only illegal, it greatly increases your risk of drowning. The effect of alcohol is intensified up by fatigue, sun, wind and boat motion. When considering your drinking level remember- "one equals three".
Don't drink before and during boating. And keep an eye out for your guests as well. You are responsible for your guests' safety.

3) KNOW BEFORE YOU GO!

Use a checklist to be prepared. What's the weather forecast? Any local hazards? Have your maps or charts? Have your PFD, first aid kit, tools and spare parts? Is your safety equipment all working? Do you ave enough fuel? Have you told someone where you are going and when you will be back?

4) WEAR THE GEAR!

Your PFD of course, good sunglasses, sunscreen and appropriate clothing. Paddles, whistles and flares are the right gear too.
