Car Safety and Teenagers

Ontario’s roads are the safest in Canada, and the second safest in North America, due in no small part to the efforts of enforcement officers, public health units, emergency service workers, and road user safety groups.

While we have had great success, there is still more work to be done. Ontario leads the country with a seat belt usage rate of 92.5 per cent, according to the result of Transport Canada’s July 2001 survey, but this is still short of Ontario’s goal of 95 per cent seat belt user safety groups.

Research tells us there continues to be a high percentage of teenagers not using seat belts as passengers and male teenage drivers are less likely to be wearing seat belts than female teenage rivers.

NEWTON’S FIRST LAW OF MOTION

Newton’s first law of motion states that an object in motion continues in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an outside force.

Like maybe a seatbelt?

WHAT'S HOLDING YOU BACK?

How does your opinion compare?

In a recent Canadian research study, the participants were young males (ages 16-25) from a rural setting. It found:

There is divided opinion in relation to wearing seatbelts. Among respondents who wear seatbelts consistently, they cite the fact that it is law and that they wear seatbelts for safety reasons as primary motivating factors.

Among respondents who do not consistently wear seatbelts, they feel that they should not be told what to do and that wearing a seatbelt should be a personal choice. Those who not regularly wear their seatbelts also express the opinion that seatbelts are uncomfortable.

There is general acceptance that it is appropriate not to wear seatbelts when driving short distances or when not driving at high speeds, such as on the highway.
