Road Safety on the Highways of Northwestern Ontario
The Thunder Bay District Health Unit is committed to reducing the rate of injuries caused by motor vehicles crashes on the roads of Northwestern Ontario. We are a member of the Highway Safety Education Committee (HSEC).
The HSEC is made up of other partners committed to promoting Road Safety these include:
- Ontario Provincial Police,
- Ministry of Transportation,
- Thunder Bay District Health Unit,
- Northwestern Health Unit,
- Regional Coroner's Office,
- Bowater Forest Products,
- Trimac/Bulk Systems,
- McKevitt Trucking Limited.
The HSEC identifies road user safety issues, develops and implements strategies to reduce the number of collisions, injuries and deaths on the highways of Northwestern Ontario.
Safe driving messages are promoted on radio, print, pamphlets, presentations on aggressive driving and road rage, posters, placemats, and hand delivered messages from enforcement officers.
Recently the HSEC developed and installed the first of several "Moose on the Loose" highway billboard. These were developed to promote awareness of the dangers of wildlife on the roads. Drivers are encouraged to adjust their driving.
