Safety, Drugs & Alcohol

Did you know...

  • injuries kill more young people than all diseases combined;
  • injuries are not accidents", they are predictable and preventable;   and,
  • almost 90% of injury deaths could be prevented?
  • Prevent injuries by ensuring your home is safe for children,  using child car seats correctly, wearing a helmet when on wheels or on the slopes, using safe driving practices to decrease injuries caused by motor vehicles and staying fit to prevent injuries caused by falling.

As well, choosing to use alcohol or other substances can affect your health. What you take and how much are factors in the effect alcohol and/or substances will have on health. While drinking alcohol can be enjoyable at lower amounts, too much can increase your risk of certain cancers, health problems and injuries.

Using substances can also harm you. Each substance has different effects on your body and can lead to dependence, addiction, or other illnesses. Misusing alcohol or substances can not only cause health problems, but often leads to family, school and work problems as well. For older adults, taking medications correctly is important in preventing injuries.
