Depo

·        A hormonal method of birth control given by needle

·        Contains a hormone found in the body

·        Prevents pregnancy by preventing the ovaries from releasing eggs

·        Requires one shot every 12 weeks to prevent pregnancy

·        First injection given within first 5 days of starting your period
or within 5 days of having an abortion
or within 5 days of delivery

·        Back-up birth control measure should used for the first month

·        Does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases

·        May increase the risk of osteoporosis
Health Canada recently released a public advisory warning about long term use of depo.

·        Side effects may include: weight gain, moodiness, headache

·        Spotting /bleeding commonly occurs during the first year of use

·        When you stop using Depo-provera it may take many months before you can get pregnant.
