IUD

·        Specially shaped piece of plastic, one IUD is wrapped in copper, the other IUD available is called Mirena and it contains the hormone progesterone.

·        IUD will be inserted in the uterus by a doctor.

 

You must visit the sexual health clinic to see a clinic nurse and doctor
You will get a referral to another doctor for the IUD

Procedure

·        Unclear how this device works, but it is believed to prevent the sperm from reaching the egg or prevent a fertilized egg from implanting

·        Once in place, the IUD may remain in for 2 1/2 years, often without problems

·        Must feel for threads to ensure IUD is in place

·        Effective method of birth control for women who are in a stable relationship

·        Long term birth control method, for 2 ½ years

·        Can not be felt during sex

·        Inexpensive

 

 

·        Usually used for women who have had children and are in a stable relationship

·        Not recommended for women who have multiple sex partners

·        Needs a medical exam and doctors prescription

·        Can be uncomfortable to insert

·        May cause heavier cramps and bleeding in the first months after insertion

·        Must regularly feel for threads to check placement

·        On rare occasions the IUD can move and may puncture the uterus

·        Does not protect against STD's

·        May increase chances of getting STD's
sometime leads to infection that result in PID or Infertilty.
