These hormones

  • Stop eggs from ripening
  • Prevent ovaries from releasing eggs
  • Makes it difficult for the sperm to get through the cervix by making the cervical mucus thicker

Procedure

How to take the pill:

·        The doctor will tell you which day to start taking your pills

·        Always start a new package on the same day of each month

·        Swallow one pill at the same time each day

If your package contains 28 pills:

·        The doctor will tell you when to start your pills

·        Take a pill at the same time every day of the month

·        Once this package of pills is done, start a new package the next day

·        Each new package is started on the same start day

If your package contains 21 pills:

·        The doctor will tell you when to start your pills

·        Take a pill at the same time every day for 3 weeks, then do not take a pill for one week

·        Restart a new package after this week is done

·        Each new package is started on the same start date

Missed pills

·        Take the missed pill as soon as you remember and use condoms as a backup

·        If you don't remember until your regular pill taking time take both of them together and use condoms as a backup. Missed pills increase the chance of pregnancy.

·        If you have missed more than 1 pill, read your package instructions or call the health unit at 625-5976 or 624-2000

First time pill starts and restarts

·        You must use another form of birth control [eg condoms] while taking the first package of birth control pills

·        Note, antibiotics and some other drugs may decrease the effectiveness of the pill

·        Always check with your doctor or pharmacist if a medication will decrease the effectiveness of your pill
