Pregnancy Testing & Options

Click on the links below to learn more:

When should I get a pregnancy test?

A pregnancy test is most accurate if it is done at least a few days past an expected menstrual period and first thing in the morning. Any secondary symptoms of pregnancy like nausea, breast tenderness and fatigue may also warrant a test. The test is designed to detect HCG which is a hormone produced by the placenta.

Where can I get a pregnancy test?

  • There are also home pregnancy tests available at most drug stores.

What if my test is negative?

More than likely you are not pregnant. However, you may be advised to have a repeat pregnancy test if your period has not come within 2 weeks after the first test. Sometimes if it is very early in the pregnancy the HCG level may not be high enough to be detected in the urine.

What if my test result is positive?

You can see a health care provider or visit our sexual health clinic if you wish to discuss options that are available to you.

You have three options available to you if you are pregnant.

  • You can choose to have a baby and raise the child
  • You can choose to have a baby and place your child for adoption
  • You can choose to end the pregnancy - In Thunder Bay, safe and legal abortions are performed up to 12 weeks and they are covered by your Ontario Health Card.

There is no right or wrong choice for everyone. Only you can decide which choice is right for you. But deciding may not feel easy to do - there is a lot to think about. Talk about your feelings with someone you think will be supportive. Please click HERE to access the Canadian Federation for Sexual Health website for more information.  You may see your health care provider or visit our sexual health clinics to further discuss potential options that are available to you if you wish.
