Pregnancy Testing & Options

When to test:

A pregnancy test is most accurate if it is done at least a few days past an expected menstrual period and first thing in the morning. Any secondary symptoms of pregnancy like nausea, breast tenderness and fatigue may also warrant a test. The test is designed to detect HCG which is a hormone produced by the placenta.

You can have a pregnancy test done

  • By your health care provider
  • Or at one of our sexual health clinics for a cost of $3.00.(For Clinic Hours Click Here)
  • There are also home pregnancy tests available at most drug stores.

If one has a positive pregnancy test, they can see their health care provider or visit our sexual health clinic if they wish to discuss options that are available.

If your test is negative:

More than likely you are not pregnant. However, you may be advised to have a repeat pregnancy test if your period has not come within 2 weeks after the first test. Sometimes if it is very early in the pregnancy the HCG level may not be high enough to be detected in the urine.

If your test result is positive:

You have three choices available to you if you are pregnant.

  • You can choose to have a baby and raise the child
  • You can choose to have a baby and place your child for adoption
  • You can choose to end the pregnancy - In Thunder Bay safe, legal abortions are performed up to 12 weeks and they are covered by your Ontario Health Card.

There is no right or wrong choice for everyone. Only you can decide which choice is right for you. But deciding may not feel easy to do - there is a lot to think about. Talk about your feelings with someone you think will be supportive. You can visit the Childbirth by Choice Trust website to access the online booklet, "Unsure about your pregnancy?  A Guide To Making The Right Decision For You".  You may see your health care provider or visit our sexual health clinics to further discuss potential options that are available to you if you wish.
