Sexual Health Definitions

ectopic pregnancy  | ejaculate | epididymitis | infertility | osteoporosis |pelvic inflammatory disease

Ectopic Pregnancy:

Ectopic pregnancy or tubal pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants somewhere outside the uterus, most often in one of the fallopian tubes.  Scars in the tubes from infection may block the passage of the egg.  If not treated, the growth of the embryo may rupture the fallopian tube, causing loss of the fetus, internal hemorrhage, infection and or possible death for the woman.

Ejaculate:

Ejaculate is when the vas deferens, prostate gland and seminal vesicles contract to move semen (a clear fluid) out of the penis through the urethra.

Epididymitis:

Epididymitis is a condition caused from untreated Chlamydia and or Gonorrhea.  The infection spreads from the urethra to the testicles, causing swelling and discomfort.  If left untreated, this condition can lead to sterility in men.

Infertility:

Infertility is the inability to conceive (make a baby) or carry a child to term.

Osteoporosis:

Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by calcium depleted bones that are so porous and fragile they can easily break.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease:

Pelvic inflammatory disease is often a complication from untreated Chlamydia or gonorrhea infections.  It is an infection of the female genital tract involving the endometrium, fallopian tubes and or peritoneum.  Individuals may experience lower abdominal pain or tenderness.  It is treated with antibiotics.
